The 4x4 part of the tour climbs from Funchal to Pico do Areeiro at 1,818 m — on a clear day you can see both the eastern and western tips of the island — then descends through Ribeiro Frio and the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva forest on an off-road track, winding through terraced farmland to the marina at Quinta do Lorde.
There you board a private high-speed boat for a whale and dolphin watching cruise along Madeira's coast, accompanied by a marine biologist. In summer there's the chance to snorkel and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Ponta de São Lourenço nature reserve.
